Austin, for leisure?
We woke up rather late today, mostly because of the overnight drive last night. Since we were in a hotel, we didn't have the sunlight to awake us like we did at the Badlands. On our way out of Irving, we stopped and got a cheap breakfast at Waffle House.
Three hours later, we were in Austin. We got a room at the Homestead Suites, just over the river from the city's main district. We did our laundry and just kinda chilled out in the room, watching Germany lose to Italy in the Euro semifinal. Apparently Austin is having a bit of a cricket problem due to the heat. We had a bunch of them in our room, but the hotel did have a sign up saying there wasn't much they could do about it. So it goes.
Thanks to TCNJ's very own Eva LaSata, we found a nice tequila place to go to near the park in Austin. We all had a few margaritas and half-off appetizers. From there, we went to the park and tossed around the frisbee. I happened to see a couple of pickup soccer games happening, so I tied up my boat shoes real tight, and Tim and I stepped in to play. We played for almost an hour, with Kyle tagging in for Tim half way thru. Kyle denied me my first hat trick in boat shoes! (Editor's note: Clare was an exceptional cheerleader.) After we left the pickup game, we walked down to the river and jumped in to cool off, which was entirely refreshing.
Overall, it was probably the most relaxing day we've had so far on the trip; between only driving three hours, spending downtime in the hotel room during the afternoon, and just spending some leisure time in the park. Tonight, we're going out to the bars on Sixth Street in Austin, where there's apparently plenty of live music. I'm posting from there now; it's definitely living up to the billing.
Tomorrow, we'll grab breakfast in the area before driving east to Atchafalaya Park near New Orleans, and camping out around the area. It'll be our last night camping on the trip, before a hotel stay in New Orleans, and then hopping between a few friends' places. Goodbye tents and hotel beds, hello couches and floors.
