Jackson to Bryce, one week in.
While we were making the boring drive from Jackson thru Southwest Wyoming, I decided to tally up some stats.
Gas: 2,850 miles in, $425 spent on gas. That means the gas fund has $625 left. We've gotten the mileage up to 23.4 mpg for the trip.
Food: I haven't been tracking the individual expenditures, only group groceries. For that, we're at $182 total, or $45.50 per person.
Lodging: Thru the first six sleeps, we've camped four times and stayed in two hotels/hostels. Our average cost of stay per night is $56, per person it's $14/night.
We've also been playing a license plate game... 50 states, minus Hawaii plus Washington DC. The national park parking lots make it a bit of a breeze. After a week, we're up to 44/50. Missing New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Delaware, South Carolina, and DC. Also got three bonus Canadian provinces.
We're looking for some more interesting car games. Help us out?
Our drive south today took us thru Salt Lake City, where we stopped in at the Mormon Temple. Very interesting area, lots of weddings at the tall, symmetric temple. The visitor center had an infinite number of paintings, a huge statue of Jesus set against the cosmos, which was quite a unique sight. Overall, I think we all felt a bit out of place. (Editor's note: understatement.) Afterwards we came across an In-N-Out along the interstate, which inspired us to search out and stop at the next one, ten more miles south. Burgers, Animal Style Fries, and Millshakes!
We then continued south, getting a little lost. Only went 15 miles or so out of our way, but we did manage to find a grocery store out of it. All the roads we drove on thru Utah were unbelievably desolate. Rolling hills and buttes all around, with the tiniest of towns. On our drive we saw multiple rabbits, cows, and coyotes on the side of the roads as we drove thru southern Utah, as well as bats flying all over the place.
We got in to Bryce Canyon around 10:00pm, to a reserved campsite courtesy of my friend Alli from Pitt. Firewood and kindling for free. Great times around the fire with a star-filled sky. Tomorrow we explore Bryce Canyon before driving an hour over to Zion.
