Free Parking!
We awoke on Sunday morning in the Courtyard Marriott, looking forward to continuing our longest stay in one place for the whole trip. Surprisingly enough, we were feeling a bit sluggish after Kyle-Day. After showers and retrieving the car from the worst valet service ever, (but free, hehe) we drove back into the heart of the French Quarter.
When we drove by Cafe du Monde on our way to park, the line was out the tent. After walking thru some shops and the market, we were able to walk right up and grab a table. This French coffee and doughnuts place is apparently a local legend in Nola. Pretty delicious coffee, and the fried powdered donuts were tasty too.
We walked around for a little longer, seeing a statue of Andrew Jackson in a park, before hopping back in the car and driving to the Garden District. Clare's friend Tim lives in that area, and we roused him from his slumbers to come out and drink with us for the Euro final. We watched the first half at a place called the Bulldog on Magazine Street, with an outdoor patio, great beer selection, and a beer tap fixture water fountain. Spain really came to play. I can't tell what was better: David Silva's header into the far corner for the first goal, or Xavi's pin-point pass for the second. I could watch both, over and over and over.
We spent the second half at Tracey's, another bar further down Magazine. Much more lively crowd, despite the game's outcome already being decided. We all got roast beef or catfish po-boys, which were okay I guess. I still don't understand what makes a po-boy different. On our way back up Magazine after the game ended, we stopped in one more bar called Rendezvous.
We got back to Tim's place feeling kind of beat, and host-Tim went off to work. After lazing about for a little while, we decided to do something with our lives and drive back into the French Quarter. On Tim's suggestion, we took the ferry across the Mississippi River to Algier's Point, where there were nice houses aplenty and a river walk. Once back over in the French Quarter, we all donated a dollar to the slots at Harrah's. Our late lunch meant a late dinner, so we stopped in at Acme Oyster's just before close for one last taste of delicious Nola fare. Clare seemed overall disappointed with the city's cuisine, but I'll give it a thumbs up.
We were fairly tired at this point. On our way back to the Garden District we stopped at host-Tim's work, Half Moon Cafe. Played some pool, skee-ball, and talked to host-Tim before heading back and crashing. Today, we're up early to drive thru Mississippi/Alabama on our way to Nashville, Tennessee. Our plan is to stay with another one of Clare's friends, Lauren. Free lodging for the win!
