Quintessential America.
This article is being written pool side at home, meaning yes: we made it. This is also the first one I'll write that won't be checked by my trusty editor, so hopefully I don't screw up too royally.
Our Wednesday morning on July 4th was unlike any other on our road trip. We woke up late, lounging around casually watching Wimbledon, because we were in no rush at all. We planned to leave for Washington DC from Eshani's house around 3pm, which we did right on time. Caught the metro in from Fairfax to Farregut North.
Our plan was to grab drinks and appetizers around DC before the fireworks at 9 off the Washington Monument. We stopped in at a few places near DuPont Circle, namely Black Fox, Alero, and Lindy's. We got free chips and salsa at Alero, and some cheap food at Lindy's. We set up our blanket just off the fenced in lawn area on the National Mall.
The fireworks were a pretty cool sight to see, especially with the monuments right there. America! After everything finished up, we walked south to the Lincoln Memorial. The reflecting pool was narrow and shallow because of the drought happening now, but it was still cool to see the monuments at night. We also walked thru the Korean War Memorial before heading back to the Metro. Being in DC for the fireworks on the 4th is definitely a cool experience.
Today was a hearty breakfast of eggs, turkey bacon, and berries before our four hour drive home. We squeezed Eshani into the car for the final leg; everyone seemed comfortable enough. Pulled into West Windsor at 2pm. More than enough time for me to spare for my class at Mercer at 6pm tonight. Kyle goes into work tomorrow as well.
So, that's the end of it. We made it home. No car issues to speak of, either. Leslie treated us kindly. I hope everyone enjoyed following our trip from the articles here... thanks for all of the kind words I've heard from Kyle, Clare, and Tim's friends and family. The picture compiling and album posting will come soon enough. I'll also post a summary of sorts for the trip in the coming day or two, just to show off the cumulative stats.
It feels weird to be back in Jersey. Can't say I've ever been happier to be back, though. No place like home!
